Vending Machine Challenge

Hey Vatsal, Nice thought to show vending panel, but this panel makes the layout bit cluttered, Just giving you a thought.... what about adding on some more details about vending machines there and remove the vending layout, you can add tab there and show information or view of panel, since that vertical rectangular blue patch disturbing layout and making it look dull using space!! You can add details about each machine earnings, when the machine was last filled and other important updates for user!! Just suggesting you, what if you incorporate refilling of multiple products all at once giving a control right there, Like what you have done here is increasing the number of clicks for each slot user has to do things multiple times. Just giving you a thought!! Since you are dealing with large data, what if you incorporate a filter there which would filter on each attribute, just trying to make work of user easier. what's saty? Also giving color Red, Yellow is fine but you have chose blue, which doesn't go with the meaning and action. I mean!! I would suggest you rather use same color whether the solt is partially filled or less, but after all our goal is to keep machine full right? I would recommend you to add a label there if you consider accessibility few of them are color deficient, adding an text or label along with color would help them even more!!! Just Trying make Design accessible to all hope you got my point!!! Keep up the best work!!

Hey @Siddhida B The opacity is reduced because the machine is not on right now. you can see a toggle switch for the same. But now that you have pointed out I think opacity could be increased for better view. There are sorting options and search bars when more machines are available. There are multiple kind of machines and the challenge was open ended. I have created this UI for regular capacity vending machines. Also the vending machine view can be closed as you can see in 5th screen. Thank you for your feedback!

Hey, The vending machine layout you presented seems pretty cool, like to address few things here, You have shown deactivated card there 7th card where completely reduced the opacity, it made me difficult to read the content over that card, I hope there might me some reason behind this, but user may miss the important information which he may actually need to be taken in to notice. What about when there are more vending machines available?, do you think these cards would not be best fit for of finding or displaying the massive information. Also when you have thought of presenting products into vending machine format, there are few vending machine capacity of 100s of units. So do you think that layout will actually work there? I was bit distracted by that view, but I am bit confused how are you going to present the larger one? That's all from my side! Best luck.

I like how you define the actual layout of the vend machine and the tray id for moving or displacing the stock in the machine. Overall, this is a very clean, consistent, and to-the-point solution! Hey Ritik, I would like to give you a few suggestions: Splash/landing screen: - The logo has very thin line because of which it is getting mergered with background which has gradient. Try to use thicker border line and colours with higher contrast. - The text "when you've..." also has low contrast and has very low readability. Try to use colour that have better contrast. - What is does line with dots at the edge stand for, it is not conveying any meaning. Avoid using elements that are not required, additional elements distract the focus from main information. There is no font hierarchy headings and text under it have same font size and font weight. Home screen: - There is a lot of information about a single machine given on the home screen. Only important information like Machine ID, Location and how many product are short in total information can be sufficient. - Why is filter hanging in the middle? Fonts used are larger than the heading at the bottom. It is the first thing that I see when I land on this screen. It is not the primary feature. It should be moved to right edge and font size and weight both can be reduced. - I cannot see any details of how many products each are missing. That is a very critical information that you have missed. - Why is the first machine highlighted with orange patch in the background? It is grabbing more focus. Is there any reason? Hamburger menu: - Try to left align Espresso love with Profile, Settings etc. and reduce the font weight. Machine details: - The information shown here is almost the same except the longer of products than the home screen. More details like revenue earned. How many products in total is the machine short, how to edit the machine and products details and how to refill products. Adding all those information would have made much more sense.

Hey Ritik, it's a very neat design you've got there. I have some suggestions that you could think of... 1. As I see you have laid info about all machines one after the other and essentially the person will have to look through the whole list to see what needs to be updated. And that red warning sign does make it very easy to scan the list (that's a plus point). Here's another approach, keeping the main goal in mind, why not make a list where in they can first see how many machines need a refill. with less details. e.g. a list with location name and then a sign or number that tells them if any products need a refill. That way it would be easier to scan. Because you see at first glance, I don't "need" to see the zipcode or machine ID of the machine, that information is relevant to me once I know if it needs attention or not. 2. You have a lot of pages in the hamburger menu, but where in all those is the way to get back to the home screen. Like if I click on Profile, how will I come back to home screen. 3. I guess you can better utilise the home screen to make the user's job easier and to show the system's state. For example, you can show "✓ All machines are fully stocked" and "3 machines need refill, see more info" and that way you can give them a sorted list. 4. Lastly, did you consider changing the point of view to the products rather than the machine. I don't know about the research but that's just another perspective to look at. Meaning that you show them which products need refilling in diff areas/machines. Just an idea. I guess that'd be it from my side, hope this helps and have a great week ahead.

One way of representation is an outline of vending machines, but again each vending machine has a different capacity and different attributes, so with certain consideration and assumption, I have chosen a generic approach with a table format. Machine status and metrics is the representation of machine condition with respect to stock refilling, the cashed amount that is needed to be filled for offering a change to the customer, and other machine health condition. and yes, the percentage is not a good metric so considering that I have added stock units that needed to be refilled. Hey Vaishnavi, I really like your theme, it's giving off a cool, modern vibe. Great job. I have a few confusions in the interface, maybe you can address those. 1. The semi-circular meter that I see in the middle of the screen, I'm not able to understand what it's saying. Like what are the black and orange sides representing. I have another great idea for this representation... how about you show a vector outline of a vending machine and fill it to the amount that it is filled (you can even use red, orange and green colors to signify the urgency of refill) 2. Just below that meter, you've written 48% full of stocks, that sounds like two conflicting words in my head.. full and 48%. Nevertheless, in my opinion percentage won't be a good metric here because it's not giving me any relevant insight. The machine being 48% stocked could mean that there are all products available but half in quantity OR it could mean that only the half the products are available. My next steps would differ in both cases. So maybe you could show the percentage (and numbers) based of diff products in the machine 3. In the screen at the bottom right, the last column stocks is showing 2 statuses - empty and refill. Which both sound kinda the same to me. I mean I would need to refill even when it's empty. What I think you mean when you say refill is that it's about to be empty, so maybe you can say sth like "Very few left" I guess that's it from my side. I hope this helps, have a great day. Hey Wiktor, There are a few suggestions that I would like to give: - The grey that is used in the background gives a feeling that this screen is disabled. If you want to use grey use a lighter shade you that it has a greater contrast with information on the top. Money panel - "You'r daily income" can be move to one line to save the empty blank space on the right. - The highlighted circles around "$2345.32" number is getting merged with the other text at the top and bottom. Try to avoid such elements it clutters the space unnecessarily. - "$235.32" there is no need to add shadow under it and the numbers are not vertically center aligned. - Heading's font size is too big on the entire screen. Reduce the font size. -"SPH sale..." font color is not readable. Try to have greater contracts with fonts and background. - Table underneath does not have heading, how will the user under that is the information about. Also the information is not centrally aligned in the column. The rounder patch under "3 December..." is too dark and grabbing too much attention, it's color can be light and the icon's size can be reduced a little big so that is has some space around the edges. - Try to build a font hierarchy, "Total sales" and "income" cannot be at the same hierarchy. Total sales is the heading. -Increase the space between "income" and "$1432.00". Also increase space between "$1432.00" and "Refill" to separate the information Home screen: -Try to keep home screen first in the bottom navigation bar as it is the most important thing that needs to be seen first. Also reduce the icon size a little bit so that it is not very close to selected circle patch. Little bit of padding makes the UI look really clean. - Date's font size is too big, reduce it's size. - "6" font color is getting merged with is background due to low contrast inside the circle. It is not very clear that it is 6/27 from the circle. Again the highlighted circle around the circle is touching other elements which is cluttering the space. - Instead of "add new machine" and "scan" taking up a lot of space. It can be moved to top right as it is an optional feature and not very critical. Instead you can show information about multiple machines and shortages in each machine. MapNo Zoom screen -It is a good idea to show on maps how much is each machine short of. - Filter option (All, full etc) is not very clear. Try to add a primary color to highlight the selected information. Increase the blur radius and decrease the opacity of shadow used under patch behind "all". -Again table is missing headings. Info icon is too much. Details about the machine screen - Instead of showing a QR code there show an empty box to indicate you scan the machine. It should be a separate screen to just scan the machine and it should go away after it is scanned. - There should be legend in the screen the explain which color stand for what like low, medium etc. - There is a lot of information which is not well segregated. - Instead of row 1, column 1 each slot can have a code to reduce clutter and make it easier to identify the slot. -What will happen when I will on scanner and history? Why are this features added here? - There is no need to add shadows under the product images. "Pepsi" etc the font color is too dull. The text under it is not visible. - What does tick mean here? It is not very clear. - "pcs" after 0/15 is not required and is not visible due to it's font size. Product details: - Why have you added blue circle at the top it is cluttering the space and diverting focus from main text. Why have you added vending machine images in the background of the main image. That is not required, try to avoid extra elements wherever possible.

Hey Vijay, I want to address to address few things here! 1.As you have added the products on home screen, I got bit confused on the thought and reason behind this, since user wants to search vending machine which are out of stock at first glance. 2.There is lot more you can improve in terms of choosing colors, since all of them are too bright and overpowering to my eyes. When you say so "Select Vending machine' you have to give something to select the vending machines the heading here says that right? So the heading is bit contradicting here. 3.I am trying to evaluate your solution practically since you have just shown 2 products out of stock in practical sense there wont be actually 2 products, better you can add some real data and information about the products. 4.You need to add the location where the machines are running out of stocks, a filter would be fair enough to search the machine and the products in the machine to get the quick results. As user how useful it would be to see relevant details about the profit and other important details? just giving you a thought!!. 5.Lastly, I would suggest you provide a way or an option form where user can fulfill the refillment of the stock out products. I'm just wondering if we take into account the search for location based search instead of direct listing of vends, in second screen I easily figured out the low stock for selected vends, but if we can see the revenue for slot machine & also add refill request CTA for sending message to stock dispatcher, that will add more value driven solution, I hope it aids in the refinement of your solution. The screens are clean and have the correct information that is needed. Here are some points that can be looked upon to improve the design : - On the Dashboard itself you can have a bar showing what machines are critical, and need refill so that the user can access it from there itself. And this way the user will see the priority info as they open the app. - Try to keep the bottom Nav bar simple and with fewer options. Like alert can be put on the dashboard screen on the top right side as it's a notification right. - Map view is actually not needed in my opinion. A simple list will do the job with a filter option to choose all, refill needed, and not working as you have included. Your work is really nice and clean. Loved the UI. Keep growing ;)

Hi there, Satish I have the following suggestions for your design please consider them as my feedback. You have given a map for the vending machine here, I would recommend you to add machine names or count at a particular location, I would suggest you provide the machines list running low stocks and products count along with a location-based search. Also, a button for a stock refill can add great value to the user so that he can quickly figure out if the machine running low on stocks and refill them at the earliest. A search on the product list screen for finding products running out of stock will be a great benefit for users. Bullet-like numbering added to the products can be changed to a simple serial number or maybe a product name with a reference number because the current numbering with hard shadows is looking visually weird here. I would recommend you add back navigation for the machine detail screen to navigate back and forth. It would be great if I get the column name of the vending machine for which the products need to be added or refilled for better use. About the UI here, the design looks dull. Fonts are too weighted rather I would suggest you maintain consistent weights for the overall design. Also, you need to use proper padding here and text wrapping as font names are getting mixed with circular badges.

This design looks good and is pretty much closer to the given challenge.

Hi there, Madhumita I would like to help you with some suggestion here, On home screen you add top low stock running machines with their products. For vending details, again I should get the clear view of products that are running low in the machines, currently I cant see that in your design. Also process to edit delivery address but this can be operated separate form machine. You can also provide vending machines which are running low stocks and there details. Also you have added a banner at home I would suggest you to add the total profit income earn and other important details which keeps user updated. You have added product shortage there, but products shortage in deferent vending machines can be different so you have to be precise about the information and related details. Again shortage screen, should provide a way to maintain refill of stocks as sending alert here serves no purpose. The bottom bar you have added send button and sort by, appears to be wrongly placed controls, where sort by can be located at top. There is no way provided to the user, where in he can see the products running low and refoulment button to fulfill machine requirements. I would recommend you to add a machine details screen where in I can see the location, and products running under machines and from where I can mage all refill.

The numbers are just given randomly for example. If there are 4 shortages in the machine there'll be 4 cards of each product in the list with balance, machine number, stats, slots just like the one shown. In that case, the 4 cards will have same machine number and they have sort options as well. They can sort machine wise, demand wise, etc.

It is a vending machine right . A person can't just come for filling for only one or two products . Like if the vending machine lacks more than 3 or 4 products its good . The re filler can refill the vending machine . instead of coming only for one product. Well thats my opinion

Hi there, Jana. I would love to suggest you on design improvements here, which I believe can add value to user and your solution. 1. On the home screen you have given a search product, rather I would recommend you provide a search based on the vending machine. since products and cate gory for each vending machine can be different, it would be best in terms of finding results if one can search based on the vending machine and then the products under them. 2. I didn't understand, why you have added the category of the vending machines on the home screen, rather you can show the top vending machines which are running out of tocks. Showing vending machines which are already running in better condition and selling products adds no value though. 3. You can add a location-based search to find the machines running low at particular locations, Again adding ratings for machines is of no use, rather you can replace ratings with product count running low. also, showing vending machine thumbnail adds no sense all of them have the same look and serves no purpose here. 4. It's already my machines page, and you have added view all, so that button adds no sense rather. can add some more about vending machine status working or faulty so one can fix them at earlies and utilizes at their fullest. It would add great value to users if you add an option to refill the out-of-stock machines with desired or new products 5.Some UI suggestions I want to provide are - Please maintain the consistent font hierarchy and spacing, spacing between fonts is making design clutter. Also, try on experimenting with other fonts since this is not as clear though. Lined categories added there are making the design too messed up. Low-selling items and best-selling items categories in orange font here you have missed their alignment and also added ratings there which actually serve no use for the user. Good try for overall design, and a lot can be improved.

Hey There! I have some mixed feelings about your solution -I liked the category filters that's going on the first page, users can explore vending machine items in their vicinity. However, this week's challenge is supposed to be related to an owner who is try to manage the vending machines owned by him/her and not supposed to be the customer side of things. -I am not sure how your vending machines are getting rated, does it have a customer side app as well? Or is it being rated on google, I am not sure. Moving on, I see multiple tags for each vending machine which is fine but having a name of the machine or a "Machine ID" would be great to identify the machine if the owner is owning a lot of them. -The 3rd and the 4th screen, shouldn't they be after the last screen that you have put because for a min I was unable to understand the flow of the design. -On the last screen, why are there multiple CTAs to view details when the details can be displayed on that very screen itself. You can show 5-7 best selling and worst selling items and then later give an option to view more for more details. The whole screen space is getting wasted and can be used more thoughtfully. -Visually, I feel the cards are very cluttered. Try to space elements more and try to re-iterate on it a bit as well. The red tags are super small and have a very low contrast making it not so good in terms of legibility. This solution has a lot of potential. Overall, great attempt. All the best buddy

Hi there, Pabitra. I would like to assist you here by suggesting you few improvements on your design solution. I can see the floating add button here, I am not able to understand why you added it there may be you know it better. It would add great value to the user if I can see some vending achiness with their product status, which may update user for the machine he has to look at first to make them full. 4 and 5, are going completely off my head, since add new screen heading is bit confusion to me rather I would suggest you to add way from where once can quickly see the out of stocks items and can refill the machines with desired count. also the randomly added close giving me not hint what I have acted upon. For last screen you have given search for location and below you are giving list for products. Please correct the placeholder text. The add available products on the product list here is giving me no clue. Better, you can add list of products which are running low machine with respected to there maximum count and available count reference or tag number where they can be added. Total and availability is giving me no scent of information. You can add a total revenue or profit earn from machine, please give a way for the user where he can just find the machines, running low stock and take action on them to make them working. There is huge scope of improvements for your design

Hello, Abhisheak. That looks fantastic! I realized that the layout of a vending machine is simply similar to the layout of a home screen, which increases the efficiency for fixed category items in that slots. If a user has vending machines in multiple locations, we should tailor the search to find vending machines in those locations. because scalability varies from domestic to international I like that the items needed are also included in the dashboard, but I think the user might be overwhelmed by too many details at once. As a result, it is preferable to convey the inventory analysis for each machine individual basis. I would suggest adding some way for users to add refill requests for each machine or stock wise.  hope you will consider feedback & improve iteration. Good Luck Thanks Bharath

Hey Juhi, I would like to give you a few suggestions: -Firstly, information about different vending machines is missing, it is no where mentioned as the how many products is each machines short of. - The logo is taking up lot of space, try to reduce it's size and remove pink background under it. - Try to use uniform type of icon, either use filled or line icons. If you are using line icons try to have similar thickness. - Here logo looks selected instead of dashboard. Use primary colors where you want highlight the information, show it is selected or it is clickable. - Font size of the left navigation bar is too big, try to reduce it. - Try to build a font hierarchy to clearly differentiate the headings, subtitle, body text etc. - Try to clearly define color pallete. Dashboard word has a different color than other text. -Juilie Smith can be a smaller text or it can be remove as that can be part of profile screen. - Try to use thicker or bigger fonts for headings "Top products", "Expenses" etc than the inner text. - Avoid using pink in the background as the focus is shifted from main information the background. - In sales you should mention details about total capacity of each slot. Slot name of the machine and what is the price of each product. - "Expenses" make no sense without actual numbers and percentages. What is the duration is which these expenses occurred, even that information is not clear. - Information related to revenue is not mentioned anywhere. - "Top products" and "products to reorder" should also be shown on each machine level. Otherwise what products are missing in different machine will never be clear. - What does "Top locations" mean, there could be multiple machines in each location how will the user identify which machine is doing the best. -Also the table's line thickness needs to be reduced and lighter shade of grey can be used to reduce focus from the table to content inside it. It would have been better if you had shown other screens like inventory, machines etc the flow would have been much more clear.

Hey Ashlee I see that you have made an entire flow from being able to see which machines are running low on stock connecting to a checkout cart flow which is amazing. However I see a few gaps in the design which you can take care about the next time you design. -On the 4th screen, if I click on the location pin for any particular vending machine, why is it giving me an option to adding items to cart. I as a user would have liked to see some information about that vending machine if I am clicking on it along with ability to take various actions that might need to be taken. -On the 5th screen, I can see which items are low in stock. However, the color that is used to communicate the message to me is not right. You cannot use the primary color to indicate any warnings. A red or a yellow depending on the context should be used to highlight warnings. -A vending machine is a small machine with limited capacity for storage. If a user is adding items to cart, he/she should also be able to see the maximum capacity it can hold so that the user can decide how much capacity needs to be filled rather than entering any random number for ordering items. -In a checkout flow, an overview should be seen before completing the payment flow so the user can confirm if the order made is correct or not. You have done the opposite. UI Feedback - Bright orange on white is super high contrast which is somewhat straining my eye. Tryout some better color palletes, you'd find plenty on the internet. -Try to use consistent icons throught the design. On the bottom nav bar, it feels like there are 2 icons which are on the active state but in reality the thickness of the icons are just not consistent. -If the icons, menu items are not so common for the users, it's better that you label the icons. -Spacing and the text styles can be improved on the 4th screen. Overall, it was a great attempt. Good Luck

Hey Lakshmi, I would like to give you a few suggestions: Screen 1 - Buttons are too big, instead of buttons you can add the sign in form and show some information about the product to utilise the space. - What does the bar graph at the top and loader at the bottom indicate. It is making no sense. - Why is there a purple line at the button it is not reduced, avoid using unnecessary elements. Screen 2 - Avoid using patch behind heading (Location here), it looks like button for selection and diverts focus from main screen. - "Add new" looks like emergency button, try to place it at the top right corner and make it rectangle to save space. -Filter icon looks too big. It can have a box around it saying filter and show what it can be filtered by as it has sufficient space. - Location 1, 2 etc is not sufficient, each place can have multiple vending machine how will a person select among them. - Even the vectors used have too much colors making it look messy. Try to use similiar vectors, Location 4 vectors does not have black border whereas all the others have border. - The screen looks very empty you can add some more information like, number of products each machine is short of etc and also add few more locations to give more information at a glance which will also fill up the black space. Inventory screen (1st screen on the bottom left) - There is overuse of colors, the focus goes on background more than the text. Use colors only at the place where you want to highlight information or it is an actionable feature. Here instead of dark purple and light purple, 2 light shades of grey would have given it a much cleaner look. - Here there is no information about number of pieces it is short of, what is the tray number, product price etc. - Back to location should be at the top left corner instead of bottom as we are used to perform back action from top left. Also you can remove patch behind it and just use the text. Location screen - How do I reach this screen? - There is no product name, no quantity mentioned. No information about how can it be refilled. The flow is not complete and there is still a lot of scope for UI improvement.

Hey I would like to give a few suggestions - The screens are too basic - In the first screen, there is no detail, the buttons are too big, and the bar at the right side and the graph at the left side don't make any sense. - The second screen, all four illustrations don't give any information about the place. - Why there are info bars at the side of building illustrations? - You should learn the UI principle Well, Keep it up.

Hello Bhuvan I am able to see very add-ons in your design like reported issues, last power cut etc which would help me as a machine owner to be aware of all the issues occuring. However, I have some other thoughts about the solution that youve provided. -the search bar icon should preferrably on the left side of the bar because humans tend to process visuals faster than text also our eyes scan the screen from left to right side. So try to use the icons in buttons, bars on the left side to reduce cognitive load. -A vending machine owner can possibly have multiple machines under his ownership, so just having MACHINE ID is not sufficient to be able to identify the correct machine. A name, machine's location what category of items it sells etc can be shown. -Instead of seeing just the last power cut, being able to see history of power cuts would be better, because once or twice it might happen due to some techincal faults but if the power cuts are happening a lot then issues can be pointed out quickly. -I would suggest you to rework on the total items available (content). Right now the icon is looking like a battery icon. Sorting the items in a particular way would also be a great thing. (Item ID, quantity or A-Z) -The filter By overlay popup can be fixed. The padding at the top is not equal to the one at the bottom. Great attempt overall. Best of Luck

Hey Joao The colors you chose and the way you solve this problem with the map and the different icons and colors to show the status of the vending machines is good. The fonts and the shapes are making the Ui design too sharp and it's distracting to me. You could've used rounded shapes with this font so it would've looked better I guess. Just experiment with different things. All the icons are in the same color ( Dark Blue ) it's confusing I can't identify instead of dark you can use color icons or emojis. Keep it up.

Hello Nilesh First up, my attention went towards the repititive vending machine illustrations/icons. In my opinion, those illustrations are not providing any value visually to the user. Instead of that you can add the real life image of the machine or just remove the image to be able to use bigger better font styles in the same space. Talking about fonts, I am hardly able to read the text on the cards, the size is too small. Try to keep it atleast 14px for good legibility. In the 2nd screen, I am confused about "filled" and 'in stock". Don't they mean the same thing? The illustrations on the 2nd screen of tea and coffee don't help much because the icons would not be very familiar to a normal user. Good Luck
